"Two Thumbs Up!"

Here are a list of links to great products that I have discovered for my family and myself.  In order to make the list, the product must meet the following criteria:

  • if food, it needs to contain healthy, natural ingredients
  • be made with earth friendly practices and not negatively impact a certain group of people or culture
  • it should have an economical price, but sometimes it might be necessary to pay a higher price for a good product
  • childrens books and videos need to be age appropriate and contain themes and content that promote positive images
Feel free to email information about any products you think I should try, I love to try new stuff!  kg@fulltime-mom.com

Danny the Dragon
dannythedragon
Danny the Dragon Meets Jimmy is the first book in the new series by author Tina Turbin.  Even before we opened the cover, the kids were attracted to the story by the adorable illustration of the spotted dragon with red sneakers.

The first book in the series introduces us to Jimmy, a boy who finds a beautiful shell that contains a magical secret.  Each turn of the page, with it's colorful and adorable illustrations, leads up to meeting Danny the Dragon and his little sidekick Skipper.  The story has characters that act politely, helpfully, and respectfullyIt is a sweet story that sparks imagination.  My littlest said, "imagine if I found a magic shell, what if we had a dragon live at our house, can I listen to our shells to see if they talk?", she loved the magical ideas of the story!  The other part that is fun is that at the end of the book, the children are left wondering about what other adventures Danny and Skipper have been on and where else the will go!  (We will definitely continue with the series to keep up with Danny the Dragon!)

I have to also comment on something else that I love about this book.  The author has a CD called Danny the Dragon: Dreams.  As I write this, my daughters are listening to the reading of the story.  My older daughter is holding the book and turning the pages for her little sister to follow along to.  It reminds me of being young and having book on records, they are so fun for kids who can't read yet because they can listen and follow along on their own.  Plus, the narrator really has a lovely voice and the sound effects keep the kids interested.   A bonus to this CD is that after the story there are 10 songs that are soothing and beautiful to listen to, my girls are currently dancing around the living room to the music.  The songs are delightfully arranged and I can imagine playing them in the background while the kids played or did crafts, they really do set a peaceful feeling.

**As I mentioned above, I am all about products that give back.  This CD is one of those products.  I suppose I am especially excited because ALL profits from the CD go to the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University Medical Center.  These donations support Dr. Peter Green in his research and publications that help bring awareness to Celiac's disease and to living on a gluten free diet.
This touches me personally since my daughter has this disease and I am a proponent of raising awareness!**

The author, Tina Turbin, is a mother of 3 who wrote her first children's story at age 16.  In addition to being a mother and author, she is also a humanitarian and advocate for children and families with an intense involvement in education, literature, Celiac's diseaseand gluten free issues and allergies.  Tina dedicates herself as an activist to reputable organizations, and works passionately and tirelessly to raise awareness and support for these issues.  It is this work that inspires her to write about these topics and share her knowledge though many creative outlets.

Kids Entertainment

***Episodes also found on Youtube @Slangsmans World***

I am a foreign language teacher and ESL teacher so when I find a kids show that focuses on other languages, I get really excited!  This show is a good one, and if you are getting tired of Dora teaching your kids Spanish, then this will be a refreshing change.  The characters are cute, the animation is colorful and fun, and the kids can learn words in multiple languages.  I also love that songs are used to teach the vocabulary, I think that is a great way for the kids to learn.  It is on the web and I hope it gets to PBS nationally soon....check it out!
