- 24 million gallons of oil are needed to produce a billion plastic bottles
- The average American consumes 167 bottles of water a year
- Bottling and shipping water is the least energy efficient method ever used to supply water
- Bottled water is the second most popular beverage in the United States

My latest homemade endeavor was spawned by my hated of bringing excess plastic to my house. Each week we recycle tons of bottles and plastic items that we used for such a short time. It occurred to me that I could stop some of the plastic assault by making just a few homemade products. Here is my line up of products that I will no longer be purchasing from the store:
1. Shampoo- tonight I made my first batch of shampoo from the following ingredients: castile soap, jojoba oil, lavender, sage Here is how I did it: 2 cups boiled water with sage and lavender-steep for 30 min. 1/4 cup castile soap (Dr.Bronners Fair Trade) 1 tsp jojoba oil combine all the ingredients and fill up a reusable bottle with a cap.
This will not be thick shampoo like you buy in the store. It is thinner and won't get super soapy like you are used to. However, your hair will feel clean and smell amazing, not to mention benefit from the herbs that you choose to put into your shampoo. This shampoo is totally animal byproduct free, 100 % vegan, organic and made from plant oils, and will not harm the earth in any way!
2. Body wash and shampoo for the kids
3. Household cleaners: dish detergent, kitchen cleaner, floor cleaner, window and surface cleaner I can use the castile soap by itself with distilled water or I can add vinegar and baking soda in a spray bottle or bucket to clean around the house!
4. Laundry detergent A 1/3 cup of the Dr. Bronner's can be used to wash a load of clothes!
Just think of how many bottles will not enter my house by making these simple changes.....Imagine if we all did these simple changes!!!
more to come.....
